Are you having trouble swallowing?

Speech Therapy for swallowing can help! A speech-language pathologist completes a dysphagia evaluation to determine where the problem is happening, potential causes, and treatment methods.

Treatment of swallowing problems incorporates education in strategies for safe swallowing, recommendations for food textures if needed, and a personalized exercise program. Imaging of the swallow mechanism is often recommended to assist with rehabilitation.

Common Symptoms May Include...

  • Coughing during or right after a meal

  • Feeling food "stuck" in your throat

  • Difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing

  • Recurrent acute or aspiration pneumonia

  • Requiring more time to chew or eat meals

  • Complaints of pain when swallowing

  • Changes in vocal quality during or after eating and drinking

  • Weight loss, malnutrition or dehydration from not being able to eat  enough

  • Food and or liquids leaking from the nasal cavity

  • Inability to maintain lip closure, resulting in food and/or liquids leaking from the mouth

The McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP) is an exercise-based therapy framework for the treatment of swallowing issues in adults with dysphagia.

It focuses on progressive strengthening and coordination of the act of swallowing, by using functional swallow activities and refining the muscles that influence movement patterns involved in swallowing.

The MDTP sessions systematically contain more swallow attempts than traditional swallowing therapy to allow for greater intensity and eliminating maladaptive or avoidance behaviors.
